Simonds High Student wins Job Fest 2012 Contest

30 Apr

District 8 Blackberry Playbook Winner:

Nicholas Remete of Simonds High is presented with a  Blackberry Playbook  from Joan Wilkins, School District 8

Job Fest 2012 took place on April 2nd and 3rd for all grade 11 students in School Districts 6, 8, & 10.  Workshops, resources and networking opportunities set the stage for students, as they explore and prepare for their career.  Job Fest was transformed from a one day physical event where students convened to an online virtual environment. This new model incorporated the features of the traditional Job Fest model that students indicated were the most beneficial to them and introduced new strategies and skills that are required of job seekers who wish to remain competitive in today’s emerging workforce. All grade 11 students who participated in Job Fest had a chance to win 1 of 3 BlackBerry Playbooks and other free giveaways by finding hidden codes in some exhibitors’ booths and filling out a short feedback form.

This year, there were 46 booth exhibits, with companies representing a cross-section of industries and post-secondary training institutions in our region. The goal is to make students aware of the diverse career opportunities that are available to them. Below is a list of participating organizations.

Integrating Technology and Music in the K-5 classroom

;

Kyle Peters is a Music teacher at Seawood Elementary School in School District 8. In speaking with Seawood Principal Matt Bedard recently, he is excited to see technology being integrated with the K-5 students at Seawood. I had the pleasure of observing Kyle’s Kindergarten lesson at Glen Falls School yesterday. Mr. Peters’s had a group of five-year olds playing Ukulele’s in sync, teaching multiple cords and providing students wonderful opportunities to perform. What a joy to see these children so engaged in their music program.

ST.VINCENT’S BOYS’ – ST. MALACHY’S MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI NEWS

Thank you to all the alumni who attended the 2011 alumni dinner was held on Friday evening, June 12 at the former Knight’s of Columbus building on Coburg Street with 185 alumni in attendance.

The evening began with a ‘Wine & Cheese’ reception at St. Malachy’s Memorial High School from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM. This was also an opportunity for alumni to have a guided tour of the renovations and expansions which have taken place at the school. With a present student population of 1100 the expansions were certainly essential and the tour was a big hit with the alumni who had not seen the expansions. Continue reading
