On Thursday, April 26, 2012 P.R.O. Kids celebrated the founding members of the organization and shared success stories. Without the hard work and dedication of the founders we would not have been able to provide encouraging and life changing recreational experiences to over 5,000 local children. Continue reading

Positive Recreation Opportunities for Kids

Did you know?

Poverty is a social issue that impacts a significant portion of our community in Greater Saint John, shown by Saint John’s staggering poverty rate of 24.5% (Saint John Vibrant Communities Leadership Roundtable’s 2004 Poverty Reduction Strategy for Saint John). If we ever hope to overcome it, we must break the cycle by assisting the next generation. Financial barriers are not limited to people defined in the official poverty statistics. For a variety of reasons, hardship is being experienced by a growing number of families. Continue reading

With her nomination papers filed on the first day of eligibility and signs popping up throughout the city, At Large Saint John Council candidate Shelley Rinehart is ready to throw open the doors to her campaign headquarters in Brunswick Square. “The office is a vital piece of the campaign, it is another way for me to connect with the taxpayers of Saint John and I am inviting everyone to drop by for a chance to talk about the issues, look over the office and have a snack, says Rinehart.”

The Inaugural

MILLIDGEVILLE FoG CUP 2012

On Saturday March 31, 2012, the Inaugural Millidgeville FoG Cup was played in support of our friend Duncan Webster’s 4 year old daughter.  Maria Webster suffers from a rare enzyme deficiency called ALG9 deficiency; also known as congenital disorder of glycosylation 1L (CDG-1L) or ALG9-CDG. She struggles with severe physical and cognitive delays and frequent seizures. Foundation Glycosylation – better known as The FoG – was established by Maria’s family to raise funds in order to support research for therapies targeting CDG.  All money collected in our tournament will go directly to The FoG. Please take the time to visit www.theFoG.ca to learn more about the foundation.

The tourney was a huge success as more than 40 players turned out for the event at Millidgeville North School.  For many of the players, it was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and square off against some old rivals from around the Saint John sporting circles.    BBQ’s, 50/50 draws, beverage sales, registration fees and donations contributed to the The FoG fundraiser.   A grand total of $2,500 was raised on Saturday!

Special thanks to Terence Sullivan for his leadership in getting this tourney off the ground.  Also, thank you to Alex Cunningham at Molson Canada for sponsoring product and give a ways during the event.

Finally, a huge  thank you to all the players and volunteers for making the Inaugural Millidgeville FoG CUP a success.

When?         Saturday, March 31st @ 2:30 pm until approximately 6pm.

Where? Millidgeville North School Gymnasium.  Please enter through the School District 8 Office main doors and follow the corridor all the way to the gym.  The first parking lot is on the top of the hill, on the left.

Who? Anyone who is connected with Duncan and wants to support a super important cause.  Ability to actually play ball hockey is, of course, optional!

What?  A round robin ball hockey tournament where teams will be determined by the Throwing of Sticks.  Teams will be chosen at 2:45, with the 1st game beginning at 3:00pm.  Anyone arriving after 3pm will be placed on a team in some fair way.  We’ll play a round robin tournament of 4 on 4 with a sub(s), plus a goalie.  The two best teams will battle it out to have their names engraved on the Millidgeville FoG Cup!

Why?   Please take the time to visit The FoG.ca to learn more about Maria and her condition.

Registration Fee of $25 per player was collected prior to playing.  If paying by cheque please make it payable to Foundation Glycosylation.  Charitable receipts will be sent out by mail for those who include their address with their registration.
