Bubba wins the 76th Masters

What a great finish to our first major golf pool of the year!  Congratulations are extended to  co-winners of the 2012 Masters Pool;  Jason Rideout and  Nick Munn who both  finished the weekend with a score of -10.   Rounding out third place was Andrew King with a score of -7.  Golf fans and poolies alike couldn’t have asked for a better finish yesterday unless they  selected Rory or Tiger of course.  However,  Sweet swinging Bubba Watson won in style during a playoff which added to the drama at Augusta.  Who doesn’t like a guy with a name like Bubba?

On a personal note, my twitter experiment was certainly a great deal of  fun leading up to and during the tournament as I exchanged golf banter with my twitter peeps who assisted me with my selections.  A very consistent 6th place finish during 3 of 4 rounds of golf.  Compared to last year, my Twitter Experiment was a great success.   Special thanks to Kara Leger and Bryan Facey for playing along in our fun this weekend.

I’m already looking ahead to the  US Open.    Please contact me at michael.whelton11@gmail.com or @michaelwhelton (twitter)  if you would like to join our fun in June.

Thanks again to Ryan Connors for organizing this great fun!

Masters Pool 2012 – Round 3 Summary

Happy Easter Sunday everyone! Day three at the Masters proved to be  moving day in the wrong direction for two of my picks this year.  Tiger and RoryMcIlroy bade a miserable farewell to their chances in the 2012 Masters after a disappointing day at Augusta. Step forward Phil Michelson, a three-times winner at Augusta National, and Peter Hanson, whose round of 65 was the best score this week.

Sunday will prove to be a great day at the Masters when you consider the names on the current leaderboard.  Don’t  rule out Louis Oosthuizen, a major champion. Bubba Watson, a formidable talent. Hunter Mahan, Padraig Harrington, a three-times major winner. All are within striking distance of the leader and all are capable of  shooting low numbers on Sunday.

The story of round 3 had to be Michelson and when he tees his ball up on Sunday he will have a chance to win his fourth Green Jacket, tying him with Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods.

This years “pool”  is strikingly  reminiscent of last years final,   Nick Munn in the lead  after three rounds of golf at Augusta.  The question remains, will Nick  hold on today to win our own version of the green jacket ceremony.  Other notables to watch in our pool today is local golf pro/teacher  Jason Rideout in 2nd, followed by pooly extraordinaire  and guidance counsellor Jenifer Craft.  Other notables participating in our pool this year  include Saint John Seadogs Captain Jonathan Huberdeau.  Best of luck to Jonathon  and  Greg Leland in their quest for a 2012 Memorial Cup repeat.

I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful Easter Sunday with family, friends, and the Masters.

Twitter helped me select my Masters Pool on Easter Weekend

6 Apr

The Masters

Easter weekend is my favorite weekend of the year for two very important reasons.  One, as a Christian, I remember that Jesus died for everyone. He was crucified by the Romans on a hill outside Jerusalem although he had not done anything wrong.  This is why a cross if often used as a symbol of the Christian faith.

Two, as an avid golfer and fan of the PGA, the Masters weekend  is an important symbol for crazy golf nuts like me.  For as long as I can remember, a group of my friends have  rallied around the Easter Weekend with a fun-loving, joust  throwing Masters golf Pool.  Ryan Connors is the “Master mind” behind this event and does an excellent job organizing and crunching numbers for the participants.   This year, we have 21 golf fans participating for the coveted annual Masters golf pool challenge.  Typically, I don’t usually fare too well in the standings, but nobody has more fun playing.  This year, I decided to take my selection process to my other friends on Twitter for some help selecting my team. I challenged my tweeps to suggest five picks for my pool this year.  Within minutes, I had my team chosen with a little help from  twitter.   I’m calling it my Twitter experiment.  I will use my blog to keep my Tweeps up to date with our progress.

The 21 Teams are set, and I’ve decided to blog about the weekend using social media.  Many of our  teams differ by only a single player but Ryan has checked to ensure that all teams are different.

After day one of the Masters, here is where people rank….remember- moving day doesn’t happen until Saturday.
